MedTravelMex.com was conceived and designed as a result of our own personal journeys for healthcare, both in our home countries of Canada and the USA and the disappointment we faced there and in travel to Mexico to find healthcare solutions.

The disappointment in our own countries medical worlds lead us to search for a better, faster and less expensive medical treatments in Mexico.

What we found in our journey to Mexico over the last 8 plus years was an amazing set of discoveries.

Here’s what we found!

Our first “find” about medical travel to Mexico was the quality of care and the professionalism of the procedures. Our preconception was that the care and professionalism would be “less than” that which we experienced at home.

We were wrong.

What we found was simply the opposite. In the major clinics and hospitals of Mexico’s major cities the level of professionalism met, and often exceeded that which we had found at home.

The doctors were almost universally American or European trained and had skills that rivalled any of their counterparts found in either Canada or the USA.

In Canada, for instance, 38% of all Canadians are without a GP (General Practitioner). The system in Canada requires that should you need advanced care, you must be referred by your GP to a specialist.

So, in simple terms, if you need a knee replacement you must be referred to an Orthopedic Surgeon. Now, without a GP , to get that referral it becomes something very difficult to get.

As well, if you do get a referral it will take another 6-12 months to meet the Surgeon and get assessed and then an additional 9-15 month wait for the surgery. The system is totally broken.

For the same procedure in Mexico the process is much, much different.

In Mexico, you will immediately speak with the Surgeons team. They will assess you, meet with you in person and or online and then make a well-informed recommendation on how to proceed.

How does the hospital system work in Mexico?

In Mexico there are primarily 2 different types of hospitals. The hospitals for the “average local” is a public system.

Even though these hospitals are very well run and provide a great level of care they often lack the speed and facilities that the privately run hospitals do.

For all of the work we at MedTravelMex do for our clients is always done in either private clinics or private care hospitals.

As we found out during our own journey,  to get first-class medical help in Mexico these clinics and hospitals were amazing.

Clean, modern equipment and an attentive staff. The facilities surpassed almost any hospital or clinic we had found in either Canada or the USA.

So, now that we had determined Mexico was the place to go for medical treatment, what was the problem?

The biggest challenge (or problem) that we encountered was first and foremost the language barrier, followed by a close second with finding your way around the city, to the clinic or hospital , getting prescriptions and in general, all of the “stuff” involved with being in a new city and not knowing the language.

Language as a barrier.

It is often true that many of the best clinics will say that they are fluent in English. That is not really the case.

Very often, the clinics, hospitals and especially the people who you most deal with such as administrators, clerks and the frontline staff do not speak English very well.

They are often quite capable of holding up a good “general conversation” about such things as weather, travel etc but when it comes to having an informed and detailed conversation about something as critical as your health, their language skills are not the best.

This “language challenge” is especially critical in the pre-procedure and post-procedure times.

When you are getting your records arranged, diagnosis procedure and after the procedure when you need help and errands done as you recuperate this is when the “language challenge” is at its most apparent.

The second part of the “language challenge” which is may not seem to be as important as the first, but it is, is the on-the-ground day-to-day challenge of getting to the clinic from your AirBnB or hotel, getting aftercare for your post-procedure time , getting to and from the airport and a whole lot more.
